Final thoughts on Super Saturday

ddeguzman

The busiest day of the Games so far did not lack drama and intrigue.

The United States took home 17 medals, marking the largest single day haul at a Summer Olympics since the Seoul Games in 1988. Among the big winners were Vincent Hancock, winning the men’s skeet shooting competition for the fourth straight Olympics, Ryan Crouser, who took home a third straight gold in the shot put, as well as Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky. Both further solidified their case as the greatest of all time in their respective sports.

There were some big moments for the smaller countries as well. Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred upset reigning world champion Sha’carri Richardson in the women’s 100m. The Dominica won its first-ever Olympic medal after Thea LaFond won the women’s triple jump. And the Philippines saw gymnast Carlos Yulo become the country’s first man to win an Olympic gold medal after taking the floor exercise title.

Sunday should offer similar levels of excitement as swimming, athletics and gymnastics overlap one more time.
