COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The best day of the Paris Olympics games saw memorable events throughout the day and plenty of medals for Team USA and surprise results.

Gymnastics, track & field, and swimming overlapped for the first time these Olympics with Simone Biles starting things off by capturing her third gold of the Olympics with a vault win while her teammate Jade Carey took bronze.

Sha’Carri Richardson was unable to win the 100m final in the rain as Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred made history by winning gold for the small Caribbean island nation. Central Ohio native Joe Kovacs clutched out his third silver in the shot put while Ryan Crouser took gold.

In the pool, Katie Ledecky outlasted Ariarne Titmus to win the 800m freestyle for a fourth straight Olympics. The night in the pool ended with the USA mixed medley relay team winning gold in world record fashion.

Elsewhere, USA women’s soccer got an exciting extra time win, China made history in tennis, and French fans got a dream finish to the final judo event. Here are the best highlights and moments from day eight of the Paris Olympics.

The Australian team of Matt Ebden and John Peers take the gold medal in the men’s doubles in a super tiebreak on Saturday, when the team topped Americans Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek, 6-7(6), 7-6(1), 10-8.

Biles headlines gymnastics finals

Simone Biles has already collected two golds in Paris and will be hoping to make it a third momentarily. She and USA teammate Jade Carey will compete in the vault final at 10:20 a.m. on NBC4.

Eight finalists compete. Biles will go fourth. Carey will go last.

After Biles on the vault, Stephen Nedorosick hopes to win gold in the pommel horse. Earlier, Carlos Edriel Yulo won the Philippines first gymnastics gold ever with his floor exercise triumph.

Tennis: Fritz/Paul secure big bronze medal

The men’s doubles podium in tennis has two spots taken by Americans. USA duo Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul secured the bronze medal at Roland Garros with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Czech pair Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek.

Team USA’s Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram took the silver earlier Saturday after falling in the gold medal game to Australia’s Matthew Ebden and John Peers.

Soccer: USA-Japan scoreless after first half

The United States women’s soccer team is looking to make the Olympic semifinals and are scoreless with Japan after the first 45 minutes of the quarterfinals. The first half produced little offense but the USWNT possessed the ball more than 75% of the time in the first half.

The last time U.S. women’s soccer lost an Olympic quarterfinal came in 2016.

Golf: Westerville resident Jason Day surging

Australian golfer Jason Day, who lives in Westerville, is putting himself into medal contention in the third round at Le Golf National. Day has shot six-under thru 13 holes thus far to put his overall score at 11-under par.

That puts him tied for third place with defending gold medalist Xander Schauffele of Team USA. Spain’s Jon Rahm and Team GB’s Tommy Fleetwood are in the lead at 12-under.

USA field hockey ends Olympics with win

The USA women’s field hockey team will go home from the Paris Olympics having won a game. A second half goal from Meredith Sholder was enough for a 1-0 USA win over South Africa to conclude group play. With just four points and a 1-1-3 record, the Americans did not advance to the quarterfinals.

Australia, Argentina, Spain, and Great Britain are moving on from Team USA’s group. The women will return for the Los Angeles Games in 2028 as hosts.

Tennis: USA doubles pair settles for silver

The American men’s doubles tennis pair of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram will go home with a silver medal in Paris. The two fell in the gold medal match at Roland Garros to Australian doubles specialists Matthew Ebden and John Peers in a 10-point tiebreak in the deciding set.

USA won the first set in a tiebreak while the Aussies forced the 10-point tiebreak after winning the second set. It’s the first time since 2016 Team USA has medaled in men’s doubles tennis.

Morning Olympics catch-up

Happy weekend and welcome to the best day of the Paris Olympics! We’ve got gymnastics, track, and swimming coming later today but plenty more is going on around France.

Rowing concludes: Rowing at the Paris Olympics is in the books with the USA men’s eight team claiming a bronze. USA earned two rowing medals while the Dutch led the way with four golds and eight medals.

Golf: The third round of the men’s tournament is underway from Le Golf National. Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Hideki Matsuyama, and Xander Schauffele are battling for the lead.

Buckeye falls in shooting final: Ohio State shooter Katelyn Abeln finished in eighth place in the 25m pistol final. South Korea’s Jiin Yang won gold.

Track & Field: All three American men in the 100m have advanced to the semifinals, including the favorite Noah Lyles. Kenneth Bednarek and Fred Kerley join him.

Tennis: The penultimate day at Roland Garros has begun as Team USA aims for gold in men’s doubles. Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram took the first set against Australia’s Matthew Ebden and John Peers in the final.

What else is happening: The team dressage final in equestrian is ongoing along with the men’s cycling road race. USA women’s field hockey is playing its last game of these Olympics against South Africa.
