COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The final Thursday of the Paris Olympics was a memorable one for USA track & field, men’s basketball, and women’s volleyball.
Team USA won three gold medals in track & Field with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone headlining the bunch with a 400m hurdles repeat in world record fashion. Grant Holloway took his gold in the 110m hurdles and Tara Davis-Woodhall was able to be crowned the best long jumper in the world.
The 200m final produced a surprise as Noah Lyles finished third behind American teammate Ken Bednarek, who claimed silver, and the gold medal winner Letsile Tebogo of Botswana. It was later confirmed by Lyles he had tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and his participation in Friday’s 4x100m relay is up in the air.
The Americans eclipsed 100 total medals at these Olympics and reached 30 golds as well as clinching two medals in team sports. Men’s basketball maintained its impressive winning streak by coming back from down 17 to beat Serbia in the semifinals. Women’s volleyball also won a semifinal thriller as they beat Brazil in five sets.
The surprise came in the pool as the three-time defending gold medalist women’s water polo team lost in a shoot-out to Australia to miss the final. Here are the best highlights and moments from the last Thursday of the Paris Olympics.
