COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The first Monday of the Paris Olympics is in the books and we have a plethora of medal events and American teams that competed.
Swimming had five finals which saw the US claim four medals while the U.S. men’s gymnastics team earned its first medal in the team competition in 16 years, taking bronze.
USA women’s basketball cruised in its opening match while the US women’s rugby team made history qualifying for Tuesday’s semifinals, giving them a chance at winning a medal.

Fast start for Djokovic against Nadal
Novak Djokovic has gotten off to a fast start against Rafael Nadal in the highly anticipated tennis matchup. The Serbian broke Nadal’s serve early in the first set and already has jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the match at Roland Garros.
US field hockey tied at half against Spain
It was a defensive first half for the USA women’s field hockey team as they are tied 1-1 with Spain at halftime in its second game of the Olympics.
Sophia Gladieux scored the Americans’ goal while goalkeeper Kelsey Bing made five saves.
Morning swimming roundup
The third day of swimming got underway with three events having morning heats in the pool.
Women’s 400m individual medley: Americans Emma Weyant and Katie Grimes made the final with the two fastest times. Canada’s Summer McIntosh will be both swimmers’ chief rival for gold when this final takes place later today.
Women’s 100m backstroke: Similar to the 400m IM, two American women finished with the two best time in the 100 back to make the semifinals. Katharine Berkoff and Regan Smith cement themselves as favorites for the semis later today.
Men’s 800m freestyle: Bobby Finke will represent America in the 800m freestyle final on Tuesday after finishing with the fifth fastest time. World champion Daniel Wiffen of Ireland and Italian Olympic medalist Gregorio Paltrinieri will be among the favorites for a stacked final.
What to follow this morning
Happy Monday and welcome to day three of the Paris Olympic Games!
We’ve got an action-packed day ahead with the men’s gymnastics team final and five swimming finals to cap things off, but there is plenty of must-watch action this morning.
Medal catchup: Medals in three events have already been awarded with China taking two more golds. Sheng Lihao won the men’s 10m air rifle event while diving duo Yang Hao and Lian Junjie won the synchronized platform event. South Korean shooter Ban Hyo-jin won the day’s first gold in the women’s 10m air rifle.
Nadal-Djokovic tennis showdown: Arguably the biggest tennis match in recent memory will be starting momentarily from Roland Garros. Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Spain’s Rafael Nadal, who have combined to win 46 grand slams, are set to play in the singles second round soon. This could be the last meeting between two of the game’s greatest players.
USA teams in action: Three American teams are playing this morning starting with women’s field hockey at 7:15 a.m. against Spain. Women’s water polo returns at 9:35 a.m. to also play Spain and women’s volleyball plays its opening match against China at 11 a.m. All three matches will be live on USA Network.
Incoming medal events: Equestrian will hand out its first medals this morning in individual and team eventing. The men’s mountain biking final is next to start at 8:10 a.m.
