Paris Olympics: What to look for, what to watch on August 10

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — It’s the penultimate day of the Paris Olympics but with Sunday having only a few finals and the closing ceremony, Saturday is the true final day of end-to-end Olympic action throughout the day.

Two of America’s most successful teams will aim to add to their legacies by winning gold while we will have a very busy final night at the Stade de France for track & field’s closing. Here is what to watch and a schedule of all the medal events on the 15th day of the XXXIII Olympiad.

USA women’s soccer, men’s basketball finals

While Saturday had potential to see four USA teams play in gold medal games, we will just have two but they are in the two most popular team sports in the world. First at 11 a.m., USA women’s soccer will try to win its first Olympic gold since 2012 when they face Brazil at the Parc des Princes.

It’s been a huge turnaround for USA women’s soccer after an underwhelming World Cup last year with new manager Emma Hayes and the “trident” front three of Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, and Sophia Smith leading the way. This will also be the last time Marta, one of the greatest players ever, will play for Brazil as she aims to end her international career with a major title.

At 3:30 p.m., attention will shift to men’s basketball as the USA’s dream team plays hosts France for the second straight time in the gold medal game. LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and company overcame adversity with its 17-point comeback win over Serbia while France has seen excellent scoring from its supporting cast as stars Victor Wembanyama and Nicolas Batum shine for the hosts.

Last day of track & field

Saturday’s track & field will be just finals for the entire afternoon with eight set to be contested. On the men’s side, we will finally see the 800m, 5000m, and high jump while on the women’s side we get the 1500m, 110m hurdles, and javelin throw.

But the events to watch will be the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays which could see 400m gold medalist Quincy Hall racing for Team USA’s men and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone closing things out for the women. Those two races will be the last ones ran on the purple Stade de France track.

Before all of that, the men’s marathon will be ran as Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge aims for Olympic history as he goes for his third marathon gold medal.
