Paris Olympics: What to look for, what to watch on August 4

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The thrills of Saturday at the Paris Olympics are now history but the thrills of Sunday, the last day to feature gymnastics, swimming and track, are incoming.

After more than 25 gold medals were handed out on Saturday, Sunday will have a slightly smaller amount of medal events but among them are the biggest in the Olympics. Here is what to know ahead of day nine.

Lyles looks for 100m crown

An American man has not won the 100m race in 20 years and Noah Lyles can finally break that drought. After the dominance of Usain Bolt and the shock of Lamont Marcell Jacobs in 2020, the 100-meter race could again see the favorite succeed as Lyles enters as the world champion in the event.

His toughest rivals will be Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and his American teammate Fred Kerley and Ken Bednarek. The best 10 seconds of Olympic action will be live on NBC4 just before 4 p.m.

Final day of swimming

It’s the final day of swimming at the Paris Olympics and Team USA has had mixed results in the pool. There is a realistic chance the Americans end these Olympics with no male swimmers winning an individual medal, something that has not happened since the Paris Games of 1900. The last chance will be in the men’s 1500m freestyle with Robert Finke.

Team USA will hope to close out its Paris Games with golds in the medley relay events with former Buckeye Hunter Armstrong having another medal on the line in the men’s race, which the Americans have never lost. Live swimming coverage on NBC4 begins at 12:30 p.m.

Gymnastics, tennis, golf handing out golds

The biggest international sporting superstars are going for gold in the gym, on the clay, and at the links. Three more gymnastics apparatus finals are set for Sunday morning as Sunisa Lee looks to win the uneven bars for her third Olympic gold.

Among the most anticipated matches of these Olympics is the men’s tennis final between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros. That match is estimated to begin sometime between 8 and 9 a.m.

And at Le Golf National, a men’s golf gold medalist will be anointed and the favorites are all in contention. Defending gold medalist Xander Schauffele enters the final round tied for the lead with Spain’s Jon Rahm while Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Hideki Matsuyama are among multiple golfers in medal contention.
