COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The best golfers in the world are in North Carolina to compete in the U.S. Open and some of those golfers are vying for more than the championship.

Just 60 spots are up for grabs for this summer’s Olympic golf tournament at Le Golf National in Paris. One of those hoping to lock up a spot is Australia’s Jason Day, who lives in central Ohio.

Day has pretty much seen it all in the world of golf. He’s a major champion, a 13-time PGA Tour winner and a five-time member of Presidents Cup. But he has never been an Olympian and may get his chance in Paris.

“It would be an honor to be able to compete for Australia,” said Day. “Trying to grab one of those medals that are up for grabs and then just have the overall experience of being, you know, an Olympian and playing in the Olympics.”

Day is in great shape to automatically qualify, as the top-ranked Australian in the world golf rankings. Being able to represent his county on the world stage alongside other Australian athletes makes this opportunity even more special.

“It’s been quite a long time since, you know, you donning in the colors of your country and um, it’s, it’s exciting to be able to, you know, be part of that, you know what I mean?” said Day. “It’s something, you know, that a lot of people work very, very hard, try and, you know, capture a medal at the Olympics and, you know, that’s what they’ve been working for there the whole lot. So to be able to be a be a part of that is unique.”

While major championships are what golfers strive for year in and year out, adding an Olympic medal to the trophy closet is definitely worth fighting for. “Any medal leg, to be honest. I mean, I’ll take it,” said Day. “I’ll take it like any of those. Sorry to be honest, but you know what? It’s just going to be a cool thing to be able to one day look back and know that you competed for your country in the Olympics.”

The US Open is the final weekend that counts toward qualification to the Olympic golf tournament. Day is all but a lock to make it, along with many other big names like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Viktor Hovland.

The men’s Olympic golf tournament begins on Aug. 1 and will conclude on Aug. 4. The women’s tournament will start Aug. 7 and conclude on Aug. 10. You can watch all the golf action from the Paris Olympics on NBC4, Peacock, and other NBC Universal channels.
