More than 400 people raced up 40 floors and 880 stairs in the city’s largest stair climbing event on Saturday as part of the American Lung Association 9th annual Fight For Air Climb Columbus.

The event began at 9 a.m. at the Rhodes Tower, Columbus’s tallest building.

The event is expected to raise $110,000.

Family, friends and co-workers, as well as local first responders, climbed the stairs at to the top of the Rhodes Tower, organizers said. Firefighters climbed the stairs in full gear.

Over the last several years, the local Fight For Air Climbs has raised more than $53 million to support the mission of the American Lung Association. 

More than 26,000 participants from 44 Climb events across the country came together last year to raise more than $7.4 million.
