PORTLAND, OR (WCMH)–Nora, a polar bear born at the Columbus Zoo, is settling in at her new home in Oregon and has now been introduced to her new companion.

The Oregon Zoo shared video on YouTube of Nora meeting 31-year-old Tasul for the first time. Zookeepers hope the older bear can serve as a friend and mentor to 11-month-old Nora as she grows into an adult.

You can see Tasul was curious, but Nora, who was raised by humans, was a little apprehensive.

Curator Amy Cutting, who oversees the Oregon Zoo’s marine life area, said it’s important for Nora to have a mentor as soon as possible. She said the introduction process has been slow, but keepers believe the bears are on the right track.

“Imagine you know, you’re a young polar bear, you’ve been raised by people, you might well think of yourself as a person, and then one day the door opens and this large bear comes rushing at you,” Cutting said. “The good news for us is that Tasul is being very patient,  very respectful. She’s trying very hard to look non-threatening.”

Zookeepers say Nora and Tasul are being kept together away from the public, so they can become more comfortable with each other.
