COLUMBUS (WCMH) — The mother of Henry Green and the grandmother of Tyre King spoke to the media Tuesday afternoon.

Green, 23, was shot and killed by Columbus police officers June 6 after, according to police, Green fired a handgun in their direction. An autopsy showed green was hit seven times. The undercover officers involved were participating in the city’s summer crime initiative targeting high risk areas. Family members have suggested Green was openly carrying a weapon as allowed under Ohio law and that the plain clothes officers did not adequately identify themselves.

King, 13, was shot and killed by a Columbus police officer Sept 14 during a foot chase out of an armed robbery just after 7pm.

Police say the officer fired after King refused orders to stop and pulled a gun from his waistband.

Dearrea King, Tyre’s grandmother spoke at the news conference organized by the law firm representing both the King and the Green families.

The families are calling for independent investigations and addressed what they see as discrepancies between what authorities and witnesses have said about what happened.

Sean Walton, an attorney who represents both families, said witnesses have contradicted information from police in the cases. He said he planned to send letters to city officials Tuesday urging them to join Tyre’s family in requesting a Justice Department review of the shooting. Letters were sent earlier on behalf of Green’s family, he said.

Both shootings are under investigation and will be presented to a grand jury to decide whether charges are merited against the officers.
