FRESNO, CA (WCMH) – A California Highway Patrol officer had a frightening run in with a group of street racers.
According to highway patrol officials, the officer was responding to a call when he encountered about 40 street racers. Some were doing donuts in the street.
When the officer approached the drivers, the group attacked his car. Some of the racers kicked and punched the car as the officer tried to pull away. Bystanders captured the moment on video.
“What they did do absolutely was attack a vehicle with an officer inside of it,” said Lt. Mindy Castro of the Fresno Police. “The first strike was to the driver side of the vehicle. Very hard to strike, and had that class broken, it would’ve shattered on the officer.”
Police estimate the damage to the car to be between $9,000 and $12,000. Luckily the officer was not injured.
“Cooler heads prevailed today,” Castro said. “It was a pretty tense situation but he was able to get out without any injuries and without anyone else getting hurt.”
