DENVER, CO (WCMH) — Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall is the latest professional athlete to boycott the National Anthem.
Marshall was seen on one knee when the anthem was sung before Thursday night’s matchup between the Broncos and the Carolina Panthers.
The Broncos issued a statement, via NBC Sports:
“While we encourage members of our organization to stand during the National Anthem, we understand and respect it being a personal decision,” they said.
49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was the first to start the boycott. He was later joined by 49ers safety Eric Reid, Seahawks defensive back Jeremy Lane and women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe.
While the protest grows, here in Columbus, Team USA and Blue Jackets Head Coach John Tortorella made it clear yesterday that he will not tolerate national anthem protests.
“If any of my players sit on the bench for the national anthem, they will sit there the rest of the game,” Tortorella said.
