PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE)- It’s one of those crimes that has people asking, “Who would do such a thing?”
Someone broke into a restaurant and stole money from a donation jar meant for a boy with cancer.
A broken door and shattered glass was not the scene that employees at La Paz Mexican Food Restaurant in Portales expected to see when they showed up for work.
“We didn’t expect that. It was really sad and I know it hit my boss pretty hard,” said employee Dora Garcia.
When the owner went to see what was taken, she couldn’t find anything missing at first.
“She had already went to the back and came back inside and said, ‘Oh my gosh the cans are gone, there was two cans,’” said Garcia.
Both were donation jars. One of those was for 15-year-old Eddy Bargos, who was just diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year.
He and his mom are in Lubbock where he just had major brain surgery.
“The jar helps us with money for gas and you know money for when we’re staying in the hospital,” said Erika Bargos, Eddy’s mom.
People at La Paz hope the thief knows he wasn’t just stealing from a restaurant.
“That’s not even ours, that’s not our money, they’re not stealing from us, they’re stealing from the whole town because everyone that comes in here cooperates, ya know gives to them,” said Garcia.
While Eddy’s fighting for his life, he’s still thinking about others.
“I told my son this morning I’m like I saw on Facebook that somebody broke into La Paz and stole your donation jar and he goes, “Oh I feel so bad for that lady,” said Erika.
The owner doesn’t believe the thief stole anything but the donation jars.
The restaurant is planning on putting out a new donation jar for Eddy.
