COLUMBUS (WCMH) — It’s National Waffle Day!
On this day in 1869, Cornelius Swarthout patented the stove-top waffle iron.
According to the Smithsonian Libraries, waffle irons had existed since the 1300s, but Swarthout perfected the design by adding a handle and clasp.
It wasn’t until 1911 that General Electric marketed the first electric waffle iron.
