CINCINNATI (AP) – A man arrested on a murder charge in the death of his 4-month-old daughter found dead along a riverbank in southwestern Ohio is scheduled for a court hearing.

A hearing is set for Tuesday in Clermont Municipal Court in Batavia for Charles Crawford. The remains, believed to be those of his daughter, Kaylynn Crawford, were found less than 24 hours after Crawford told police someone snatched her from his parked car outside a store in the Cincinnati suburb of Loveland and fled. Investigators believe he fabricated that story.

“She was in the car. I only stepped out to grab her some water because she was asleep. And I came back out because I needed my wallet – it was like two or three minutes. I get in my car because my wallet was in her diaper bag…and she was gone,” Crawford told 911 dispatchers.

Police spent the morning processing Crawford’s car at his girlfriend’s apartment nearby. The search then later led investigators to Kelley Nature Preserve in Loveland.

Kaylynn Jai Crawford’s body was found in the Little Miami River still strapped into her car seat, NBC affiliate WLWT-TV reports. Charles Crawford, led police to the baby’s body.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office says Crawford was arrested Monday on the murder charge. Court records don’t list an attorney for Crawford.

Authorities found the remains and the girl’s car seat near the Little Miami River, a few miles from the store.
