ROSELAND, Ind. (AP) – A northern Indiana police department says it was a tragic accident when 14 dogs died after air-conditioning failed in the truck they were housed in for a dog show.

St. Joseph County police Lt. William Redman says the dogs were found dead found in a truck belonging to Lakesyde Kennels and Handling of Wellington, Ohio, about 6:20 p.m. Friday outside a hotel in Roseland, just north of South Bend.

Redman says the truck was equipped with air conditioning in the cargo area but an electrical circuit breaker cut the power to the air conditioning. Redman says police do not know what triggered the circuit breaker. The high Friday in South Bend was 86 degrees.

The Humane Society of South Bend is investigating the deaths.
