COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – If you turn on 92.9 in your car, it may sound different. That’s because WWCD, an independently owned alternative rock station, left the airwaves permanently on Wednesday and a new station started Thursday.

WWCD’s general manager Randy Malloy said they were not able to finalize an agreement that would have let them continue broadcasting on 92.9, so it was time for a change for WWCD and for the 92.9 frequency.

92.9 is now 93X, but they will still play alternative rock music. 93X’s program director Ian Graham said the new station may not be what listeners are used to hearing on the frequency.

“What’s going to be a little bit different is that we’re really going to be local focused, as well as not really pandering to what’s top 40 on the alternative charts but who is going to be playing at Dirty Dungarees tonight,” said Graham.

Graham said he wants to play at least three local songs an hour on 93X and tell listeners where they can see those local artists perform.

Like WWCD, Graham said 93X is a locally owned and operated radio station.

“This just isn’t some big corporation, this is one 30-year-old’s weird dream that kind of came true all of a sudden,” said Graham.

Graham said he knows many central Ohioans want to continue to listen to WWCD, but he hopes they’ll give his station a listen. In addition, 93X owner ICS Communications also encouraged local artists to submit their music for potential airplay, by emailing 93XSubmissions@gmail.com.

“I would love for listeners that want to remain loyal to WWCD to continue to listen to them online and when they’re in their car, pop us on,” said Graham.

WWCD is not gone. They are just online now. Listeners can now hear the same on-air personalities and song selections they love on a free streaming service.

“You’ll still hear us doing the local artists at the bottom of the hour, still supporting the local things going on,” said Randy Malloy, WWCD’s general manager. “I already talked to a few of the advertisers and they are like, ‘sure we’re coming with you.’”

Malloy said the only true difference will be where fans can listen.

Malloy said he thanks fans for their loyalty over the years and now it’s time for the next chapter.

“You evolve, we evolve, you know? There’s revolution and evolution so this is the evolution,” said Malloy.
