COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – NBC4 Today anchor Monica Day knows firsthand the importance of having up to date fire-alert systems in the home.
On Sunday, Day received calls from neighbors, who said smoke detectors in her home were activated. Though the alarms could be heard from nearby homes in the area, no fire or smoke was observed from outside of the house.
Upon arrival, Day said there was in fact a fire that started in the kitchen and smoke had spread throughout the home. In a video posted on social media, Day showed the damage the smoke caused in several rooms adjacent to where the fire started.
Though the cleanup effort will take a while, Day said that it could have been much worse if not for her loud smoke detectors.
“It serves as a good reminder, check your smoke detectors,” Day said. “Make sure the battery is full. If you don’t have smoke detectors get smoke detectors. The Columbus Division of Fire offers free smoke alarms.”
Day also noted the extensive damage from smoke, despite flames reaching less than a few feet off the stove, where the fire began.
“Nobody was hurt, our dogs are fine, the structure of our house is fine, I am fine. … The house is a mess,” she said.
