COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — After yet another game with late drama, the Columbus Crew advanced to the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals following a 1-1 draw against Houston, edging out the Dynamo on aggregate, 2-1.
“It’s a result that gets us to the next round. You know, we don’t want to. We’re not. I can see the goal and make things interesting. The last six, seven minutes,” Crew midfielder Sean Zawadzki said. “But at the end of day, you know, we got the result that what was needed to to get to the next round.”
Cucho Hernandez opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a right-footed kick that found the back of the net. The goal marked Cucho’s 17th goal in the last 19 appearances for the Crew across all competitions. Houston’s Griffin Dorsey leveled the match in the 90th minute off a penalty kick.
Tuesday night’s match marked the first CONCACAF Champions Cup game at Lower.com Field. Next up in the competition, Columbus will face Tigres UANL, which defeated Orlando City SC, 4-2, in the Round of 16.
“We controlled the game. We were able to score maybe more goals. But I like the way we played, so I’m pleased with that,” Columbus head coach Wilfried Nancy said.
The Crew will return to Major League Soccer action on Saturday at home against New York Red Bulls with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
