COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Recently published data shows Columbus experienced one of the highest increases in rent costs in the country over the past year.

The data was compiled by rental platform Zumper, which analyzed more than 1 million active listings across the country every month. The listings were compiled to calculate the median rent costs for the top 100 most populous cities in the U.S. Short-term listings were not included in the data.

The rent report lists Columbus as the city that saw the fourth-highest rent increase from February 2023 to February 2024. The average one-bedroom rental cost is currently $1,130 in Columbus – a 17% increase from last year.

The report lists Syracuse, New York, as having the highest rent increase over the past year at 22%. Syracuse is followed by Chicago (21%), New York (18%), Columbus (17%) and Cleveland (16%).

On a national level, the rate for one-bedroom rentals fell 0.7% over the past year, Zumper stated. The opposite is true for cities with a high demand for housing and limited supply.

A recent study by the Bank of America Institute named Columbus as the fastest-growing city in the U.S. The study said Columbus’ population grew 1.1% in the second half of 2023, which is faster than any other U.S. city.
