LAKE NORMAN, NC (WCNC)– A North Carolina community is mourning the loss of a Sherrills Ford Fire and Rescue diver who died Monday while recovering the body of a missing swimmer from Lake Norman.

Fire Captain Bradley Long, 28, has been identified as the diver.

Captain Long and two other divers were searching Lake Norman for a missing swimmer. At one point late-Monday afternoon, the divers experienced an “emergency” in 35 to 75 feet deep water. Two of the divers surfaced, but Long did not.

The two other divers were taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. One was treated and released. The second was kept overnight for observation.

“We are mourning the loss of Bradley,” Newton Fire Chief Kevin Yoder said. “He has been a valuable part of our department, and his impact will be remembered for many years to come by the Newton Fire Department family.”
