COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Police say they have recovered a teen’s body from the Scioto River.

Two children were by the low-head dam in the area of Greenlawn Avenue and Scioto Boulevard on Thursday when they both wound up in the water, according to firefighters.

Police said the teen who died, 17-year-old Caleb Faught of Columbus, jumped into the water to help his friend.

Faught’s mother Elizabeth said her son “would do anything for the people he cared about.”

His mother said he didn’t know how to swim, but that the South High School senior who faced several developmental challenges was trying to help someone else in the water.

The friend was able to get out of the water, police said.

Elizabeth said Caleb was hanging out with some friends.

“When he left I didn’t know that would be the last time I’d see him and he hugged me,” she said. “And he hugged Sadie and I and said ‘I love you.'”

Faught’s body was found about 100 feet from where he went into the water around Friday morning at 10:02am. The water was about 5 feet deep.

“I keep expecting him to walk in the door,” Elizabeth said.

Police are advising people not to get in the river this summer and to use the community pools instead.
