WESTERVILLE, OH (WCMH) — Securing your home with an effective alarm is a sound plan. Make sure it fits your needs and periodically change the code.

“Use something that’s a little more complicated. Change your code from time to time and keep your keypad cleaned off, because as dirt and grime accumulate on the keypad, it’s going to be evident the keys you’re using all the time,” said Lt. Ron McMillin of the Westerville Police Department.

Also, don’t forget a strike plate, which can stop or slow an intruder.

“Most residential strike plates, the lock sets come with a standard half-inch screw; that’s not long enough. We recommend that you take the half-inch screw, put that with the kit and replace it with two and three inch steel screws or wood screws,” said McMillin.

Having a dog can help too, but only if it’ll bark when it hears a noise. McMillin said patio doors are attractive features, but it can also be an entry for a burglar. “They make a bar across here that you can install yourself, and there’s also a dead bolt you can install in the track just to prevent the door from opening.”

And don’t forget to secure your windows. “If you leave your windows open, we recommend, they make a lock that limits the amount of travel on the window, so they can’t be opened all the way. So if you have that installed on your windows, you would be able to leave your window partially open. Otherwise, if not, close your window at night and make sure it is properly locked.”What others are clicking on:
