PORTLAND, OR (WCMH) – The owner of an Oregon rental home says his former tenants left 25 tons of trash behind when they suddenly moved out.

“I think I lost part of my soul cleaning out this 50,000 pounds of garbage,” said owner Braheem Hazeem.

Hazeem rented the Portland home to a woman and her disabled son for the last 14 years. The pair paid for the rental in part with Section 8 assistance, KGW reported.

“The first seven to eight years I came by a lot, she was fine then I kind of ignored the place thinking these inspections through section 8 would be good, uh they weren’t, apparently,” Hazeem said.

Garbage service to the home was canceled five years ago. Everything from then on was apparently left inside.

The renters suddenly left the property a few months ago. Hazeem made the horrible discovery after he filed eviction papers and entered the property in March. He’s been cleaning ever since.

“Every container I pulled milk containers… there was shredded stuff inside where the mice had created their own little house inside and the spiders? Lord help ya,” Hazeem said.

Hazeem is enlisting the help of friends to help pick up the mess. At least one of those friends is interested in renting the home once it’s restored.

The entire ordeal is costing Hazeem about $15,000.

Hazeem has one piece of advice for anyone else potentially in a similar situation, “Don’t trust people who say they’re inspecting and looking at your place don’t trust – do your own inspections.”
