PIKE CO., Ohio (WCMH) — People in Pike County came together tonight for a vigil to honor 8 people murdered exactly one week ago.
The tireless work continues for investigators as they try to uncover the reason behind these murders, but for family and friends tonight was a night to hold each close and honor their loved ones.
Stacie Rigsby, ex-wife of murder victim Kenneth Rhoden, spoke tonight alongside her daughter, Kendra Rhoden.
“We want to thank everyone for being here coming out to support our family,” says Rigsby.
“Each of them lived full wonderful lives…even though they were taken too soon, they were the best people to know,” says Kendra Rhoden. “They were all kind and full of love.”
Then, hundreds gathered outside to release balloons.
“They’re all watching and knowing that we’re here supporting everyone,” says Rhoden family friend Brandy Hoheland.
Murder victim Dana Rhoden’s father, Leonard Manley says being with close friends and family is helping them get through this tough time.
“If you got a friend and he comes up and hugs you… that’s the greatest thing in the world,” says Manley.
Stephanie Brownfield helped organize the event. She says she’s heartbroken by the murders of her friends, but proud of the the outpouring of support from the community.
“This family deserves everything we could possibly give them, regardless of why this happened still eight lives were lost,” says Brownfield. “That’s a horrible, horrible thing to have to endure.”
The vigil tonight was also a memorial fund for the victims’ families.
Next weekend there is another fundraiser for Hannah Gilley’s family. Organizers say the proceeds will help pay for her funeral and headstone. The rest of the money donated will be given to her young child.
