LAS VEGAS (WCMH) — More than a week after letting Pascal Vincent go from his head coaching duties, general manager Don Waddell and the Columbus front office made their next major move of the offseason with the fourth pick of the NHL Draft. The Blue Jackets chose center Cayden Lindstrom from the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers.
Lindstrom was named this year’s CHL’s Top Prospect Award after leading the Medicine Hat Tigers in penalty minutes-per-game and was fourth in goals with 27 despite only playing 32 games because of injuries. He led the team’s rookies in goals, assists and points in the 2022-23 season.
The San Jose Sharks had the first overall pick of the draft, selecting Boston University’s Macklin Celebrini. The Chicago Blackhawks chose Michigan State’s Artyom Levshunov with the second overall pick while at No. 3, the Anaheim Ducks picked Oshawa winger Beckett Sennecke.
Rick Nash, the Blue Jackets’ first overall pick in the 2002 NHL Draft, announced the pick at the Sphere on Friday. Nash serves as the director of player development for Columbus.
Columbus has a total of six picks in this year’s NHL Draft, which is taking place at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The Blue Jackets’ next selection will come at pick No. 36 when the draft resumes tomorrow. Columbus also has picks 69, 101, 133 and 165.
The Blue Jackets look to bolster its roster after missing the playoffs for the fourth straight year, finishing the 2023-24 campaign with a 27-43-12 record and last place in the Eastern Metropolitan Division.
The draft continues Saturday morning with rounds 2-7 starting at 11:30 a.m.
