COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Police held a candlelight vigil in honor of Officer Steven Smith.

Many gathered at Genoa Park Sunday evening to honor the slain SWAT officer.

“I would like to thank the Columbus community for all the support they’ve given the Columbus Division of Police, or the SWAT team and specifically, Officer Smith’s family,” said Lt. Paul Ohl, a Columbus Police SWAT team officer.

“It leaves a hole, but he’s got another mission now. He’s moving on to the next mission.”

Candles were lifted and bagpipes played a hymn for Smith, who was shot and killed last weekend in a standoff.

“I never heard him say a bad thing about anyone,” Ohl said. “There’s never anybody that has met him and gotten to know him that has not only liked the guy, but loved the guy.”

Chief Kim Jacobs said visitation for Smith will be held Monday in Westerville. A procession will travel on Interstate 71 north to Polaris Parkway, heading east on Polaris to North State Street in Westerville. The public is invited to line the sidewalks and bike path along North State Street to County Line Road by 1:15pm.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday.

Officials said to expect temporary road closures and traffic delays on the north side of Westerville on Monday from 1:30opm to 9pm and Tuesday from 9am to 3pm. Following Tuesday’s service, North State Street will be closed from Old County Line to County Line Road for about 30 minutes. What others are clicking on:
