BOZEMAN, MT (KTVM) — An assistant technology education professor at Montana State University says a mistake made on his fishing license renewal was influenced by racial bias.

Dr. Gilbert Kalonde found the occupation on his fishing license incorrectly entered as “CLEANS TOILETS.”

Kalonde says he noticed the mistake after his teaching assistant found it.

“And they said ‘Did you change your job?’ and I said ‘What do you mean?’ and they said ‘Your occupation, it says clean toilets.’ I’m like ‘Seriously?'” Kalonde said.

While he was renewing his fishing license at Walmart in late February, a worker asked him what his job was. He replied he worked for MSU, without specifying exactly what he did there.

“I think she stereotyped me because I’m black. She thought ‘OK, what can he do at Montana State University?’ That’s what came up to my mind straight away is she stereotyped me and gave me a job, the lowest of the lowest that she could think of,” he said.

Walmart says it is investigating and released the following statement to KTVM-TV:

Respect for the individual is one of our basic beliefs at the company — company wide — and this incident was absolutely unacceptable. We have investigated what happened with this customer, with this purchase, and we have taken steps to ensure this will never happen again, particularly around how forms are filled out and what information goes into specific boxes.
