(NBC) — Viewers have undoubtedly seen promos about what might be NBC’s most anticipated new show this fall, which finally debuts Tuesday, the hospital comedy “St. Denis Medical.”
It is from the creator of “Superstore,” who was also one of the writers on “The Office.” The hospital setting for “St. Denis Medical” is fertile ground for comedy.
“I would say it’s like “The Office” but in a hospital that’s struggling to stay afloat,” said cast member Wendi McLendon-Covey.
Meeting that challenge falls to McLendon-Covey’s character, a hospital administrator named Joyce.
“The American health care system is really fun and ripe for comedy,” said McLendon-Covey. “It’s hilarious unless it’s happening to you.”
Alison Tolman’s in the middle of the medical maelstrom, she plays Alex the head nurse.
“It’s kind of a dream to be in an NBC mockumentary comedy,” said Tolman. “What more could you possibly want?”
While David Alan Grier is Ron, the doctor who has seen it all.
“It’s really fun, man,” said Grier. “This is one of those shows that’s really well written and it means, I can just act.”
Even as the characters around him act out.
“My heart goes out to all those people who want to help who just want everything to be OK,” said McLendon-Covey.
At St. Denis Medical healing leads to laughs.
“St. Denis Medical” debuts with back-to-back episodes Tuesday starting at 8 p.m., leading into the knockout rounds of “The Voice.” Starting next week, “Night Court” returns with new cast member Wendie Malick and that will be on after “St. Denis” at 8:30 p.m. Eastern.
