COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – These days, Shaun Lane spends his time “making heaven full” as the Hilliard campus Pastor at Rock City Church, but not too long ago, he was making plays as a Buckeye.

During Lane’s five years in the Scarlet and Gray, he experienced incredible highs and crushing lows. In his last game as a Buckeye, Shaun’s life changed forever. It was the 2009 Fiesta Bowl where Lane went in for a routine tackle that turned out to be anything but.

“As soon as I hit him, I just felt my body froze,” said Lane. “By the grace of God, I was laying there, and I couldn’t feel my leg either. It started moving on the field. It came back, but unfortunately, I couldn’t feel my arm because of the injury, which is called a brachial plexus injury.”

Essentially severing that nerve stopped communication from his brain to his arm. Now, he uses his story to help others find hope in their darkest times. While it’s a painful memory, he has some incredible memories as a Buckeye, including beating “That Team Up North” five times.

Lane shared his thoughts on the upcoming game and how we as Buckeye Nation should approach it.

“It’s a game, and I often times have to remind myself of that. That it is a game that these young men are competing at the best of their ability. To play a game,” Lane said. “And that doesn’t mean it takes away from the pain of a loss, which I’m going to pray we don’t experience that this year. We are well overdue for a win, believe me. I’m going to be just as dialed in on that day as anybody else and rooting and disappointing if anything, but a win comes. But you know, life goes on after that moment.”

Lane also stressed the importance of gratitude, service and time when we are facing disappointment.

“There are others that we can be thinking about, that we can be praying for, that we can be serving, and that can take us out of the mindset of the emotions,” he said.
