COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered federal and state flags at public buildings in Franklin County to fly at half-staff.

DeWine’s office announced flags will be lowered Monday in honor of former State Senator Ben Espy, whose funeral will take place that day. Espy died on Jan. 4 at age 81. Flags will also be flown at half-staff at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center and Rhodes Tower, all of which are Downtown.

Espy served as President Pro Tem of Columbus City Council beginning in 1982 and held the position for a decade before joining the Ohio Senate in 1992. Espy served as the assistant senate majority leader for two years and then as minority leader for four years. He left office in 2002.

His funeral is scheduled for at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Church of God on Refugee Road in Columbus.

This order is in conjunction with flags across the state remaining at half-staff in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at 100. For Carter, flags will remain at half-staff for 30 days and will be raised to full-staff on Jan. 29.
