COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A new reusable coffee sleeve program encourages Ohio State students to be a part of campus sustainability.
Debbie Wakefield with university dining services said over 429,400 disposable sleeves were used on campus last year alone, creating 6,173 pounds of waste in landfills. To combat this, students now have the option of bringing their own reusable sleeves to on-campus cafes or ordering a new Script Ohio sleeve on GrubHub for $5 more with their order.
The Script Ohio sleeves come in students’ choice of scarlet or white and can be used for future purchases. Paper sleeves are still free and available on request, but Wakefield said small steps like reusable coffee sleeves can make a difference.
“This is just an option to try and cut down a little bit on waste,” university spokesperson Dave Isaacs said.
Coffee cups at on-campus cafes are not recyclable, but students are also encouraged to bring their own cups to cut down on waste. According to Sustainability at Ohio State, Dining Services gives a small discount to students who order at campus café counters and bring their own cups.
Isaacs said bringing your own cup also allows for free use of all Coca-Cola Freestyle machines on campus.
Also new in Ohio State dining sustainability, the university has partnered with SWACO to recycle pizza boxes. Isaacs said SWACO partnered with OSU for a pilot program where the company supplied stickers for pizza boxes instructing students on how to recycle the boxes.
