COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Having a security detail is nothing new for a governor.
Kasich has teams that are with him all over the state as he travels. Now that team will be moving even more as he traverses the country in the coming weeks.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol will work detail as the governor travels. But how much manpower and the cost haven’t been disclosed.
Senator Charleta Tavares will soon introduce a bill that would make out of state travel public record, giving the public a closer look at costs.
Tavares said in a statement quote:
“if he is running for President, Ohio taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for State Troopers to accompany him to New Hampshire and South Carolina when the trips are completely unrelated to his job as Governor.”
This legislation requires the openness and transparency that Ohioans expect from their Governor and from someone who aspires to hold the nation’s highest office,” she said.
As for the announcement at Ohio State University, campus police were the lead agency.
There is support from troopers and Columbus police in the form of the mounted patrol at Ohio Union. Law-enforcement teams inside the facility are highly visible
There were no metal detectors inside but bags were checked upon entry.
“When I first got here I saw police officers,” Zachary Chase told NBC4. “Security is of utmost priority. It should be better to be safe rather than take risks.”
Tracey Winbush also said the premises felt secure.
“Walked in and showed ID, we bought our tickets online,” Winbush said. “(I am) pretty sure it was all vetted before we got there. Very organized and very secure.”
