FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH)-Undercover narcotics agents tell NBC4 they busted a major local heroin dealer in Lancaster.

An eight month investigation into heroin flowing into the area from Columbus ended in a traffic stop and a K-9 search.

On July 7th, undercover narcotics agents with the Major Crimes Unit had a vehicle stopped with a driver they had been watching.

MCU’s K-9 Brasco sniffed out a baseball-sized ball of heroin agents said was hidden in a baby’s diaper bag.

“Through that traffic stop we were able to seize approximately five ounces of heroin,” said Detective Sims.

NBC4 is not identifying the narcotics agents involved in this bust, because they are undercover. The five ounces of heroin weights approximately 143 grams. Narcotics officials consider 250 grams a major drug offender in Ohio.

“A dealer of this size, this is probably our biggest target in Fairfield County,” said Sims.

Using his wife Jessica R. Cantrell, 24, and three of his children, ages 18 months, three and five-years-old as possible decoys, Detective Sims said at the very least Jason Roach, 37, intentionally put his children in harm’s way.

“With narcotics comes violence, comes guns. A lot of times in a drug deal people get robbed, shot or assaulted,” Sims said.

He said their investigation shows Roach was making a heroin run from Columbus to Lancaster. Narcotics agents estimate Roach was selling $42,000 or about 10 ounces of heroin each week. After the traffic stop on Memorial Dr. agents searched a home Roach’s family was staying at on West Sixth Street, finding more heroin, scales and cash in a locked box.

Roach and Cantrell are being held at the Fairfield County Jail on $100,000 bond. He is charged with felony 1 trafficking in heroin, both are charged with possession. Sims said the two are still waiting for an indictment.
