COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)-As hundreds of thousands of people pour into Downtown for Red, White & Boom Friday evening, there will be a new best view of the fireworks: Bicentennial Park.
What’s old is new; this was the site for fireworks eight years ago. Due to construction around the former Veterans Memorial fireworks location, the new launch area is along the riverbed east of COSI, on the west side of the river from Bicentennial Park.
Public safety is being addressed with the availability of new brightly-colored wristbands, which parents can pick up at one of five booth sites around Red, White & Boom. Parents can register their children by name and cellphone number.
Executive Director Michael Collins is very pleased with the safety arrangements, which will be monitored by officers on horseback, foot and bicycles, and the Columbus Division of Fire. The FBI and Homeland Security has also been involved in safety details.
“It’s kind of like back to the future,” Collins said. “So the fireworks are being shot from the east side of COSI, down in Genoa Park in the riverbed. So now Bicentennial Park and Civic Center are going to be just like they were in ’07.”
