COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — For the second time in three seasons, Ohio State’s men’s basketball team is not playing in a postseason tournament.
After missing out on the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season, the Buckeyes were among the teams that received an invite to the new College Basketball Crown tournament, which takes place from March 31 to April 6 in Las Vegas and must include at least two Big Ten programs for the 16-team bracket.
The new tournament supersedes the National Invitation Tournament for the top Big Ten teams that don’t make March Madness due to the conference’s broadcast rights deal. Ohio State declined its invitation and will end its season without postseason play.
The inaugural bracket was announced Monday morning with USC and Nebraska representing the Big Ten in The Crown. Cincinnati is the only Ohio school in the tournament and will play DePaul, coached by former Buckeye head coach Chris Holtmann, in the first round on April 1 at 3 p.m.
The 68-team men’s March Madness field was announced Sunday night and the Buckeyes were among the first four teams out. Ohio State was listed as the third team among the group of four alongside West Virginia, Indiana, and Boise State.
Despite resume boosting wins over Kentucky, Purdue, Maryland, and Texas, head coach Jake Diebler’s side finished 10th in the Big Ten standings with a 9-11 record and fell in the opening round of the conference tournament to Iowa.
