(NBC) — Just getting the gig to host “Saturday Night Live” is usually enough to put someone over the top, that was also the case for Jack Black, but when he heard about his musical guests, he pretty much went into orbit.

Black is a three-time host of “SNL,” but his most recent was almost 20 years ago.

“It’s the most terrifying gig you’ve ever had and it’s the most thrilling gig,” said Black. “It’s a high-wire act. And that’s why people love to watch it.”

He showcased his musical chops on the show, but he is taking a lyrical backseat this week.

“They were like, ‘And Elton John and Brandi Carlile are the musical guests,’ and then I kind of lost consciousness,” said Black. “Talk about core memories — some of my favorite songs of all time from when I was a kid. So it’s, this is dream territory here.”

Black’s also in dream-like territory on the big screen with Jason Momoa. The kindred spirits are teaming up in “A Minecraft Movie.”

“I think we both have that kind of bro energy where people scream at us from out of their windows, ’I wanna a party with you!’” said Black. “So, it was kind of a natural fit for us to work together.”

Almost as natural as Jack Black hosting “SNL.”

“You feel like you’re shot out of a cannon,” said Black.

Watch Jack, Elton and Brandi on “Saturday Night Live” this week. Next week’s host is Jon Hamm.
