AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It’s cut day at Augusta National.
At the end of Friday’s second round, the field will be cut down to the top 50 players plus ties that will advance to the weekend at the 89th Masters Tournament. Overnight rain in Augusta gave way to sunny, but breezy, conditions for the second round.
Justin Rose of England (-8), the 2013 U.S. Open champion and 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist, followed up his opening round 65 with a 71 on Friday to maintain his lead in the clubhouse.
“Sometimes it’s hard to follow a low round with another one,” Rose said. “Just the nature of it sometimes. But I feel like if you’re playing good golf, you’re playing good golf, you know. And I feel like I wasn’t pinned to yesterday’s round and I wasn’t pinned to the leaderboard and I wasn’t pinned to leading this golf tournament. Yeah, I was pretty focused on the job at hand.”

Rose set a new Masters record Thursday by holding or sharing the 18-hole lead for a fifth time.
One shot behind Rose is Bryson DeChambeau (-7), who carded a 78 on Friday.
“You have to put yourself in position,” DeChambeau said. “You have to fail. You have to lose. You have to win. You have to come from behind. You have to hold the lead. All those expectations and feelings have to get conquered in your mind. That’s why this game is played between — between your ears.”

Among the other big movers on Friday was Rory McIlroy, seeking to complete the career grand slam with a win here. McIlroy (-6), shot 66 on Friday to move into third place along with Corey Conners of Canada.
“I think overall just proud of myself with how I responded today after the finish last night,” McIlroy said. “I just had to remind myself that I played really good golf yesterday, and you know, I wasn’t going to let two — you know, two bad holes sort of dictate the narrative for the rest of the week.
But yeah, just ultimately, yeah, just proud of how I got back into it today.”

Two-time and defending Champion Scottie Scheffler shot 71 Friday to sit in group of four at -5 along with Matt McCarty. McCarty, making his Masters debut and second major championship start, also made a major move up the leader board on Friday. McCarty, who picked up his first PGA Tour victory in just his third start last October, shot 66 on to move to -5.
“They didn’t put me up there (on the leaderboard) until 13 or whatever, so I didn’t know,” McCarty said. “Yeah, just kind of stay focused on my own game and do the best I can and that’s all I can do this week.
It’s a lot of fun. You get on a roll out here, and obviously this golf course is very difficult if you get out of position, but if you’re hitting good shots and giving yourself some good looks, you can make some birdies out here. So it was fun.”

Among the other storylines on Friday afternoon is two-time Champion Bernhard Langer (1985 and ’93) attempting to make the cut in his final Masters appearance at age 67. He shot 73 on Friday and currently one back of the projected cut at +3.
“There’s always memories to battle the course, but the red (outfit on Thursday) was when I won in ’85 on Sunday, and (Friday) may be green and yellow, which was my outfit in ’93,” Langer said. “So it’s more or less to celebrate the two outfits that I put the green jacket on. That’s the idea behind it.”
