CLEVELAND (WCMH) — The Columbus Crew is set to play one of its biggest regular season games on Saturday.
The Crew will be in Cleveland to face Lionel Messi and Inter Miami at 4:30 p.m. at Huntington Bank Field. The teams have combined to win four trophies over the past two seasons, boast some of the best players in MLS and enter the game undefeated.
Strong defense has kept the Crew in form as the offense redevelops after the departure of Cucho Hernandez. Messi, Luis Suarez and company have the Herons as a team to beat once again.
The game is deserving of an NFL stadium, even though playing in Cleveland has frustrated Crew supporters hoping to cheer the team on at Lower.com Field.
Here is everything to know ahead of Saturday’s game, which can be watched live on Apple TV.
Crew unbeaten despite slower offense
Even with Cucho gone, the Crew remains a tough team to defeat. After eight MLS games, it comes in on a three-game winning streak.
The Crew boasts one of the top defenses in MLS while Diego Rossi has taken scoring duties, having five goals in MLS play. The recent addition of Daniel Gazdag should make the offense even better and bring back shades of what it looked like last season.
The Crew sits in first place in the Eastern Conference. If the offense begins to produce higher scoring games, it will rise further as the MLS Cup favorite.

Messi, Suarez hot in unbeaten start for Miami
To little surprise, Inter Miami is among the best teams in MLS again with Messi back for his third season. Under new manager Javier Mascherano, who is now coaching four of his former Barcelona teammates, the Herons have beaten opponents with their world-class passing, efficient shot production and underrated defense.
Messi enters with two goals and three assists in MLS play, while his counterpart Luis Suarez has five goals. Outside of seven MLS games without a loss, Miami has made a run to the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals, going unbeaten in six games. Next for Messi and company is the Vancouver Whitecaps, the current best team in MLS.
Miami and Columbus have not dominated opponents as often as we’ve seen in the past and have similarities in play-style and personnel. Sitting fourth in the Eastern Conference standings with a game in hand, Miami also shares the same goals scored and conceded to the Crew.

Cleveland serves as large backdrop for epic clash
Neutral site MLS games are rare, but the juggernaut that is Messi had the league and ownership wanting to shift to a bigger venue. Huntington Bank Field, home of the Cleveland Browns, has never hosted an MLS game but has hosted both the men’s and women’s U.S. teams.
The Crew has played in football stadiums, having used Ohio Stadium as its home from 1996 to 1998. But it never filled the stands even close to 60,000 capacity during those early days, making Saturday’s game likely the most attended Crew game in Ohio ever.
Messi is expected to play and make Huntington Bank Field his 10th NFL stadium. The Argentine has had multiple signature performances in America, including winning last year’s Copa America title at the Miami Dolphins’ home stadium and scoring a hat trick in Chicago in 2016 in the Copa America Centenario.
Miami is scheduled to play in one more NFL stadium this MLS season when it plays Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium on Sept. 13. In June, the team will play in the Club World Cup, which begins with Miami hosting Egypt’s Al-Ahly on June 14 at Hard Rock Stadium.
It seems likely Messi will suit up for his country once more in a World Cup when Argentina defends its title in the United States in 2026. Multiple NFL stadiums will be hosting games throughout the five-week tournament.
