COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Students at Worthington Hills Elementary School took a break from class on Friday for the 30th annual dog walk supporting Canine Companions.
Nearly 200 people participated in the walk, including the fourth and fifth grade classes, their families, and their pets.
It was created by a former teacher who wanted to raise money for Canine Companions while also educating kids about the importance of service dogs. It’s a tradition now, rooted in helping others in the community.
“They’re learning to have compassion and empathy for other people and understanding that there are some people in this world that aren’t able to do the same things they are,” said Kristi Patrick, a fourth grade teacher at Worthington Hills Elementary School.
“It means a lot to me because we get to help so many people that need a guide dog to get through situations,” student Delaney Ayers said.
Several Canine Companions service dogs in training were also at the walk — like our Puppy with a Purpose, Paris.
Paris’ puppy-raiser said this type of event gives them a chance to teach children about respecting service dogs and people with disabilities.
