COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A man wanted in connection to the abuse of a two-year-old boy has been arrested and faced a judge Wednesday morning.
According to court records, the Columbus Division of Police Physical Abuse Division was called by patrol officers, who had responded to the 1000 block of Ellsworth Avenue in the Driving Park neighborhood. Police arrived at the home, where a wellbeing check of a toddler was being conducted on May 1 at 10:15 a.m.
Police were told that a juvenile was left at the residence the previous night by an individual referred to as “Nate.” Officers observed visible and significant injuries to a 2-year-old boy, who was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for treatment.
After an examination, police said the child was in critical condition after sustaining serious and potentially life-altering injuries, both internal and external. The injuries were indicative of child physical abuse, a CPD complaint said.
Detectives identified 22-year-old Nathan Bridges after the 911-caller reported that he dropped the child off with her on the night of April 30. She told police that Bridges ignored her questions as to why the boy had a swollen jaw.
Police also noted that the child’s mother confirmed that she left him in Bridges custody that night and that he seemed happy when she left for the evening. Court records stated that Bridges made no attempt to seek medical help for the boy.
Bridges was arrested by a CPD SWAT unit, charged with child endangerment, and was taken to the Franklin County Corrections Center. On Wednesday a Franklin County Municipal Court judge issued him a $500,000 bond and scheduled a preliminary hearing for May 23.
