COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — One person was hospitalized on Monday after a fire at a high-rise apartment building in Columbus, according to Battalion Chief Jeffrey Geitter.

The fire happened at about 4:45 p.m. at the JayCee Arms apartments on East Main Street.

Firefighters saw a “significant amount” of smoke in the hallway of the 7th floor, where one apartment had a kitchen fire, Geitter said.

Some residents were helped to safety and one person was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor smoke inhalation, according to Geitter. Several others were treated on scene.

Geitter added that a two-alarm fire is standard practice for a high rise fire.

No other details were immediately available.
