FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH)–An investigation has been opened after the death of a Fairfield County Jail inmate who allegedly assaulted two deputies.

Ariel Clark was booked into the jail on Feb. 17 on multiple charges, including domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

Lt. Mark Churchill, Jail Bureau Commander, said Clark assaulted deputies twice the next day. One of the incidents resulted in a deputy getting a broken finger. During the other, another deputy got a dislocated eye socket.

On Feb. 20, Clark was moved to a new cell. Once in that cell, Churchill said, Clark began to display respiratory issues.

Jail medics called 911 after examining him and he was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Fairfield County had launched a review of the two assaults on February 18, but the process was not completed before Clark’s death and no additional charges were filed.
