FORT WORTH, TX (WCMH) — The nation’s largest airline is suing the company that provides WiFi services on its planes because the internet service is too slow.
American Airlines currently uses Gogo to provide its internet service, but it now wants to switch to ViaSat, a service it claims would provide much faster WiFi access for customers. CNN Money reports United Airlines, JetBlue and Virgin America already use ViaSat.
But here’s the proble: American Airlines is under contract with Gogo through 2018. That’s why the airline is now suing so it can switch providers.
“After carefully evaluating the new technology and services in the marketplace, American … recently notified Gogo that ViaSat offers an in-flight connectivity system that materially improves on Gogo’s air-to-ground system,” the lawsuit states.
Gogo is fighting back, saying it has new technology that will deliver a much better WiFi experience for flyers, but the rollout of that new services will be slow. Only a handful of planes will have it by the end of the year.
“We have no comment on the merits of this litigation, but we would like to note that American is a valued customer of ours and that we look forward to resolving the disagreement,” a Gogo spokesman said in a statement to CNN Money.
