COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A pair of Ohio lawmakers wants the state to be able to fine homeowners who don’t shovel their sidewalks and driveways after snow and ice.

Representative Tim Brown of Bowling Green and Steven Arndt of Port Clinton introduced House Bill 375. It would authorize townships to require the removal of snow and ice from sidewalks.

Unless you were physically unable to remove the snow, the bill states the city or town could then fine you “a sum of not greater than fifty dollars for each day that the sidewalk remains covered with snow or ice.”

Columbus City Code Section 902.03 already states that property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice off sidewalks. The section states violating the ordinance is a minor misdemeanor that could lead to a $100 fine.
