LOS ANGELES (WCMH) — A man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he posed as a Catholic priest so he could steal from churchgoers.

Erwin Mena, 60, faces 19 counts of grand theft, eight counts of misdemeanor petty theft and one count each of perjury, procuring and filing false documents and practicing medicine without a license, all felonies.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Mena managed to pose as a priest in October of 2014 at a pair of Catholic churches. He performed Mass, confessions and even a wedding, swindling churchgoers out of several thousands of dollars for his own game.

Prosecutors say his biggest scam was when he sold tickets to parishoners to take a trip to see Pope Francis. Prosecutors say he collected $53,000 from church goers, but he never made the arrangements and the trip didn’t take place.

Mena faces a possible maximum sentence of 21 years in prison.

The archdiocese tells the Los Angeles Times that is has reimbursed some victims. It also says those who received sacraments from Mena are able to receive them again.
