A Powell man is facing charges after he allegedly passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle after huffing duster.

According to the Delaware County Prosecutor’s office, Jeffrey Michael Todd, 35, was arrested on June 23 after motorists reported a man passed out behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Cavalier at the intersection of Southwind drive and North Hampton Drive in Powell. As officers were en route, Todd appeared to regain consciousness and drove the car to a nearby parking lot.

“On scene, law enforcement observed a male huffing a can of duster in the driver’s seat,” Delaware County Prosecutor Carol O’Brien said. “His head swayed back and forth, and when he exited the vehicle, he was unsteady on his feet and exhibited slurred speech.”

Duster is a can of compressed gasses used to clean dust and small debris from between the keys on keyboards. It is a common household item that can become addictive and cause severe damage to the body when inhaled.

A grand jury returned an indictment against Todd for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a fourth-degree felony that carries mandatory jail time for repeat offenders, and driving under OVI suspension. Todd has previously been convicted of five other OVIs.
