For Bobbi McCalla and her family, happy comes with hesitation and the weeks are like months she says, ever since August 23rd of last year.
“An officer of the vice unit took away our most precious gift that we’ve had. So I’m glad with it being disbanded so that it’s not a possibility for another family,” said McCalla.
Bobbi’s sister Donna Castleberry was shot and killed by an undercover officer of the now former Columbus Police Department Vice Squad.
The Columbus Police Department announced just 1-day earlier that it was disbanding the Vice Unit.
McCalla says it’s welcome news.
“The vice unit traumatized my entire family,” she said.
According to now-former Columbus Police Vice officer Andrew Mitchell, the shooting was in self-defense.
Hours before NBC4 spoke with McCalla, the department announced Mitchell was no longer on the force after retiring in bad standing.
“I believe it was so that he didn’t get fired. I think that he would’ve been let go one way or another. I think he chose to do it on his own terms which is how he seems to do things,” McCalla said.
McCalla praises Columbus Police for disbanding its Vice Squad –
“Thank God that they’re doing the right things to ensure community safety,” she said.
Just like she’s learned to do since last August, she gives pause.
But she is hopeful as she looks ahead to next month when her sister’s case goes before a Franklin County Grand Jury and soon she hopes for Mitchell, judge and jury.
“We still have a long way to go. I feel like the dominoes are falling into place that will ensure we get justice for Donna but we haven’t gotten there yet,” said McCalla.
Mitchell is expected in Federal Court for arraignment March 21st on charges on unrelated to the death of Donna Castleberry.
