Remarkable Woman Jessica Barpaye: Using her own hardship to transform lives

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — In the heart of central Ohio, one woman is quietly transforming lives, driven by compassion, resilience and a deep understanding of struggle.

Jessica Barpaye came to Ohio seeking stability. What she found instead was purpose. As the executive director of WAGEP International, Jessica has dedicated her life to supporting immigrants, women, and families in need.

“I moved over to the U.S. in 2017 and since I moved here, I really liked it,” said Barpaye. “I love the environment. I love the people that I work with.

“I’m like, well, I used to do this back home. I think I can do the same here to help them as well. That’s how I stepped in, like providing clothing, providing daily necessities for them.”

Jessica’s mission began years ago in Liberia, but when she moved to the U.S., she realized that struggles like poverty, displacement, and hardship knew no borders. Facing her own challenges as an immigrant helped her see the need for resources here in Ohio.

“Oh, my God, it was tough,” said Barpaye. “I learned the hard way; I didn’t have anyone to teach me. It was just me and my computer. I figured out everything by myself.”

That experience lit a fire in her to make the journey easier for others.

Today, Jessica delivers food, clothing, and supplies to those who can’t leave their homes. And her giving doesn’t stop there.

“I love helping people,” said Barpaye. “I should give back to the community.”

Jessica has made financial sacrifices running her nonprofit, often spending portions of her own paycheck to fund her mission. But her dedication has inspired others. Recently, grants and partnerships have made things a bit easier, but she continues to seek partnerships that will continue to open the door for an even greater impact.

“I enjoy because I have been in it before,” said Barpaye. “Whenever I’m working with them, it gives me joy. I feel accomplished. I feel my mission is being accomplished.”

Barpaye’s vision goes beyond her current efforts. She’s now working to create a dedicated facility — a safe space for women and families in crisis. Her goal is simple: to meet people where they are, provide comfort, and ensure they know they are not alone.
