COLUMBUS (WCMH) — NBC4 is pleased to continue its commitment to autism awareness and educational programming with “The Autism Puzzle.”
In this installment, we take a look at the CDC’s latest information about the prevalence of ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and what’s being done throughout Ohio to support people affected by autism.
Many parents say among the most critically needed supports in Ohio is an increase of “crisis care” for young adults severely affected with autism.
Some people can show violent, dangerous tendencies which can overwhelm families, and in some cases parents cannot safely care for their son or daughter. It can lead some families to give up their child for adoption or sign over parental rights to the state so the child can qualify for federal support funding. A movement is underway right now in Ohio to try and solve that problem.
You’ll see the moving story of a young woman who saw a lack of resources for young people affected by autism and opted to open a center for people who needed critical job skills training. It’s a story animal lovers may find exciting.
We visit Recreation Unlimited, where people with wide-ranging disabilities can enjoy a fully-inclusive camp setting.
Over the past 8 years we’ve followed the progress of Jerod’s oldest son, Brady, as he’s learned to develop speech and other life-skills through therapy. In this episode, you’ll track Brady’s remarkable progress and meet some of the people who’ve made it a reality.
